1989 West Texas Fair & Rodeo: Junior & Open Champion Southdown Ewe and Junior Champion Southdown Ram
Our Story
About 20 years ago we began developing our Southdown flock
with ewes purchased from Wedel’s Southdowns, a ewe and lamb from Cole’s Southdowns,
and a ram from Ocie Scott. The Cole ewe
and Scott ram were both junior champions at the West Texas Fair in Abilene.
For the next few years our flock was closed and our primary
purpose was to raise lambs for the boys to show. During their school careers we usually
exhibited the top Southdowns at the Crosby
County show. We had no interest in showing wethers at the
major shows, but continued to show breeding stock with some success.
As the boys began to move on to college, we had to decide
what was next for our flock. We
determined to develop sheep that can compete in the show ring and the breeding
pen. We started this process by adding
some ewes from Branham Southdowns and by purchasing James Cox’s flock. The help of these breeders strengthened our
ewe base and we began to seek rams that would do the same. We bought the second place yearling ram at
the national sale in Cleburne,
Texas that was offered by B and B
Howard. We used this ram and a son to
add dimension to our ewes. We then had
the opportunity to purchase Git-R-Done from Ludwig’s. He has added length and scale to the
ewes. A couple of years ago we added
Champ from Lewis-Riehle Southdowns to our ram battery and he has improved the
muscle shape in his offspring. The ram
we obtained from McElvain’s Southdowns continues our quest to improve our
product. Recently we purchased a Storm
Chaser son that has Goldfinger on both sides of his pedigree. We anticipate this ram adding muscularity to
improve our total package. Our latest
ram acquisition is from Robinson’s Southdowns.
He was reserve champion at the national sale in Lubbock last
summer. We purchased this ram in
partnership with Branham Southdowns. In
addition to the rams, in the last few years we have added stud ewes from
Lewis-Riehle, Colorado State University, Oldenburg, and Sink. We believe we are on the verge of being
competitive with anyone.
We invite you to come by anytime you are in the area for a
cup of coffee and to talk. We will be
glad to share the blessings so generously bestowed on us by our Lord.

John 10:27-29
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand.
